Air Liquide Santé reinforces its homecare and hygiene activities in Germany and Austria

Home treatment of chronic respiratory pathologies is a fast growing medical activity in Germany. About 400,000 people are treated at home for COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pneumopathy Disease), sleep apnea, and other respiratory diseases.

Vitalaire GmbH, a subsidiary of Air Liquide Santé based in Hamburg, has acquired Braun Meditec, a company specializing in respiratory homecare activities in South Germany (Bavaria and Bade Wurtemberg). This company currently serves more than 2,000 patients, generating an annual revenue of about 2 million euros.

Schülke & Mayr, another Air Liquide Santé subsidiary based in Norderstedt close to Hamburg, has acquired the Austrian company Arcana which specializes in disinfection products for hospitals and use by medical professionals. About three quarters of Arcana's products are marketed in Austria and one quarter in Central Europe. Its annual sales amount to about 3 million euros.

Commenting on these two acquisitions, Jean-Marc de Royère, Chairman of Air Liquide Santé International and member of the Air Liquide Executive Committee, said : "Air Liquide Santé participates to the containment of healthcare expenses in Germany and Austria, and has developed well adapted products and services, which ensure patients of high quality care. These targeted acquisitions will reinforce our position in these two countries and allow a further development in Central Europe."

In 2003, Air Liquide Sante recorded a worldwide turnover of 1,300 million euros with 6,000 employees, in medical gases, homecare, hygiene, and respiratory equipment.
