Press Release

New contract with two large industrial groups in Austria

Air Liquide has just signed a 15-year contract with Borealis, a manufacturer of polyolefin (polypropylene and polyethylene), and Austrian refinery OMV, both located in Schwechat, near Vienna, Austria. Under the contract, Air Liquide will supply approximately 9,000 cubic meters/hour of nitrogen to the two companies.

With 6,137 employees and sales of 7.6 billion euros, OMV is the top company listed on the Austrian stock exchange. The Austrian government owns 35% of OMV and IPIC, and an Abu Dhabi government-owned corporation, 19.6%.

With a staff of 5,000 and sales of 3.7 billion euros, Borealis is the second largest polyolefins producer in Europe, producing more than 3.5 million tonnes per year, and employing around 5,000 people. Borealis is owned 50% by the Norwegian oil company, Statoil, and 50% by IOB Holdings, owned equally by OMV, the Austrian oil and natural gas group, and by the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) of Abu Dhabi.

Nitrogen is used in the refinery process mainly to prevent the risk of explosion in tanks, installations and systems and to carry out certain operations, notably maintenance. Polypropylene plants such as Borealis use nitrogen in the manufacturing process.

Air Liquide will rely on the recently announced new air separation unit (ASU) to be built on its Schwechat site to meet the needs of these two customers. An extended pipeline system will service Borealis.

"We are further developing our industrial basin strategy in this region," stated Jean-Pierre Duprieu, Executive Vice-President and a member of the Air Liquide Group's Executive Committee, "based on our technological expertise, our extremely comprehensive offer of products and services, and our strong and close relations with customers."

Air Liquide Austria, Air Liquide's subsidiary in Austria, has a staff of 255 and sells industrial and medical gases, equipment and related services worth 63 million euros annually.
