Air Liquide to supply helium to one of the largest NMR-spectrometers in the world, in Sweden

One of the largest Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers worldwide has just been commissioned at the NMR Centre in Gothenburg, Sweden. The spectrometer, mainly composed of a large magnet, will be used for structural studies of biological macromolecules. The installation of the magnet, as well as its daily operation, require large quantities of liquid helium which will be delivered by Air Liquide Gas AB *, the Swedish subsidiary of Air Liquide, under a 3 year contract.

There are about ten similar NMR-spectrometers in the world. The heart of this NMR-spectrometer is a large magnet, 5 meters high and weighing 10 tonnes.

The magnetic field is generated by sending high intensity electricity into a super conductive coil. Superconductivity is obtained by keeping this coil at very low temperature with liquid helium.

During the installation phase, Air Liquide delivered large volumes of helium as well as nitrogen to cool the magnet. Once in operation, about 10,000 to 15,000 litres of liquid helium per year will be required to operate this NMR-spectrometer.

"We are very pleased to partner with such a leading research center which demands the most stringent requirements", said Jean-Pierre Duprieu, Senior Vice-President and member of the Executive Committee of Air Liquide."This reflects the reliability and quality of our products and services and the competence of our teams".

Helium is extracted from underground natural gas fields. Liquid helium has excellent thermal conductivity, about 30 times better than that of nitrogen. It is also very cold 269°C and very close to absolute zero (-273°C). Gaseous helium is used in other applications such as welding and laser processing or filling weather balloons or party balloons.

*Air Liquide Gas AB has 260 employees and had sales 77.4 million euros in 2003.
